Whilst at university I studied neuroscience. At the time choosing to opt into a graduate scheme focused on business interfacing the steel and energy industries was not on my agenda. I spent the year following my graduation working at the European Medicines Agency. It was here that I developed a passion for big business albeit in a different industry, however I was put off by the bureaucracy in the pharmaceutical industry. After looking at virtually every graduate job on the market, I realised the steel and energy industries offered career opportunities unmatched by any other industry. These industries underpin virtually everything. Without steel and energy, the world would not exist as we know it today. Edgen Murray sits at the interface between the two; buying from the steel industry and selling into the energy industry. Furthermore it has an exemplary reputation and record for success. I knew it was for me. Not only does it sit in the perfect market, but the scheme itself is structured to set you up with the whole spectrum of business weapons required for a successful career. I have been exposed to three core business functions with the bigger picture always in mind:

  • Finance; learning to finance and account for an international business.
  • Operational functions; logistics planning and execution, and quality management.

In addition, three month placements in Edinburgh, Dubai, and Singapore give an appreciation of business cultures and practices across the world. The travel is definitely one of the perks of the scheme. My highlights have been seeing the mind-blowing scale of the operations at the UK steelworks and offshore fabricators, meeting high profile clients, sitting in on executive management meetings, and attending bespoke industry courses.
