Tips & Hints
Our recruitment process aims to find out about you and how suited you are for a position within our graduate scheme. We recognise that you may find some stages of our recruitment process more daunting than others, so we have provided some hints and tips for you here on what to expect from the recruitment process and how to prepare yourself for each stage.
Application Form
Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to complete the application form and avoid submitting right before the deadline. This will allow you time to review your responses and check your form carefully before submitting.Take the time to complete your longer answers on a word processor, and then move them over to your application form. This will help you with checking the structure of your answers and your spelling.
Watch out for spelling errors and typos. It may seem like a small thing, but attention to detail is really important to your application.
Consider the structure of your longer responses. Try using the STAR technique (Situation, Task or Target, Actions, Results) and remember to answer all parts of the question asked.
Make use of the word counts available, but try to make your answers concise, informative and interesting.
Complete all sections of the application form. Each section is important and will be used as part of the application review process.
Online Testing
Make sure that you complete the online tests within good time of the email sent to you. We plan our deadlines in advance and at this point, your application is in your own hands – the sooner you complete the online tests, the sooner we can consider you for the next stage of the recruitment process.Take the time to complete the practise questions at the beginning of the online test. This will help you to familiarise yourself with how the online test works and the overall format.
Try out some practise questions before you start. You can find practise tests online at our test provider’s web site.
Make sure you have plenty of time to take the test when you sit down to do it, and that you will not be disturbed. Try to avoid taking the test when you are very tired or stressed.
Contact us as soon as you can if you feel you need additional time for any reason (e.g.: dyslexia) or if you encounter technical difficulties.
Telephone Interview
The telephone interview may feel strange if you have never taken part in one before. The interview will look at your motivation to work for Edgen Murray and several competency areas and will have the same format as a face-to-face interview. When you schedule your interview you should try and use a landline, so that your signal is reliable and your interview is not affected by poor reception. If you have to use a mobile line, make sure you have a good signal and a fully charged battery.
You should prepare for your interview in advance by reading through your application form again and researching Edgen Murray. You should also consider the reasons why you have applied for the Graduate Programme.
If you have any questions during or after the interview, or need your interviewer to clarify any of their questions during the interview, just ask. Our interviewers are all fully trained in the process and will be happy to help you by clarifying the questions if needed. If your interviewer is unable to answer any questions regarding a specific role, he or she will take note of them and we will make sure someone gets back to you as soon as they can.
If your interviewer asks you follow-up questions to your examples, don’t worry – the interviewers are trained to find out as much information about your examples as possible in the time allowed.
If you need to rearrange your interview for any reason or if you have special requirements for the interview, you should let us know as soon as possible so that we can make the necessary arrangements for you.
Face-to-Face Interview/Assessment Centre
When you are attending a face-to-face stage of our recruitment process, you should make sure that you have left yourself plenty of time to arrive when making your travel arrangements and investigate alternative routes in case of road or rail work. Arriving late or just in time will leave you feeling flustered – it is better to arrive a little early and have time to relax beforehand.Make sure you let us know if you face any delays in your journey on the day of your interview. This will allow us to inform your interviewer or assessor, and they can make arrangements if needed. Therefore, make sure you have taken our contact number, 01635 584140, with you on this day!
Read through all of the confirmation emails that are sent to you in advance. We will communicate prior to your interview or Assessment Centre, and you may miss vital information if you don’t check your emails properly.
At your Assessment Centre, take time to read through exercise materials carefully, but remember to keep an eye on the time allowed for each exercise. It’s a good idea to bring a watch with you on the day of the interview. If you are unsure of anything, you should ask before the interview or Assessment Centre exercise has been started.
Remember that throughout your recruitment process with us, our team is here to help and is more than happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have at any stage of this process.
